United Rentals Solves Indy 500 Radio Problem

Problem

During the Indianapolis 500, the largest single-day sporting event on the planet, Indianapolis Motor Speedway (IMS) staff rely on radios to coordinate every aspect of their work. But for more than a decade, the radio system failed to deliver on race day. Due to significant interference, some parts of the facility became unreachable. The radio vendor for IMS said the problem simply couldn’t be solved.

Solution

United Rentals had a breakthrough idea: Move the radio equipment away from the central area, and all the nearby antennae, to a relatively remote museum. The United Rentals team used service monitors to understand the different frequencies operating in different parts of the venue, then brought in a fully digital trunking system along with radios. To ensure functionality on race day, the team tested the system during smaller events.

Impact

On race day, the communications system performed flawlessly. IMS’s logistics manager was able to communicate via radio with operations staff members he couldn’t reach in previous years. Clear communication at the push of a button improved his ability to keep track of people and gear. “The positive feedback has been overwhelming,” he noted.

United Rentals Meets PHVAC Needs for Music Festival

Problem

A customer in the Midwest needed a streamlined rental process to meet their power and climate control needs for a large music festival with more than 250,000 attendees.

Solution

The customer needed a variety of temporary power and climate solutions to accommodate a large crowd and changing weather. With a congested installation site and the need for both air conditioning and heating, the customer needed a fast, safe and agile solution.

Impact

United Rentals partnered with the customer after sizing the electrical and HVAC needs to provide a trailer customized with all of the climate control, power generation, power transformer and distribution equipment needed. The trailer was properly outfitted with equipment and accessories needed to interface between the air conditioner and event tent.

One of the largest county fairs in the U.S. struggled with the logistics of managing rental equipment. Relying on multiple vendors to manage outdoor event rentals resulted in a fragmented and inefficient system.
