Transformer Cooling Helps Utility Avoid Derating
Summary
United Rentals developed a portable cooling solution to address heat stress on utility substations during summer, preventing transformer derating, outages, and costly repairs. The innovative system helped utilities manage increased energy demands economically while maintaining customer satisfaction and avoiding infrastructure strain.
Challenge
The heat stress on utility substations during summer can lead to overheated transformers, forcing utilities to derate equipment and potentially causing unscheduled brownouts, power outages, or phase failures, all of which can damage infrastructure, increase costs, and harm customer satisfaction.
Impact
Avoiding the high costs of derating transformers by 20-30%, which could amount to tens of thousands of dollars per day, as well as preventing power outages and brownouts that could negatively affect customer average interruption duration index (CAIDI) scores and damage the utility's reputation.
