Timber Mats Allow a Muddy Fill Job to Roll On

Timber mats at muddy jobsite

Summary

A civil excavation contractor faced unstable, wet terrain while moving 300,000 yards of dirt on a floodplain construction site and turned to United Rentals for a cost-effective solution. By utilizing over 450 heavy-duty timber mats to create a stable, temporary access road, the contractor successfully prevented equipment from sinking, increased safety, and kept the project on track.

Challenge

The inefficient water management system at a solar power construction site in California's Mohave Desert led to frequent pump breakdowns, lack of backups, manual shutoffs, and tank overfills. This caused wasted water, downtime, EPA fines, increased costs, and delays in dust control efforts.

Impact

The successful creation of a 1,500-foot by 32-foot stable temporary access road using over 450 heavy-duty timber mats prevented trucks and heavy equipment from sinking, increasing safety, eliminating costly downtime, and allowing the project to proceed efficiently.
