Temporary bus shelter constructed from repurposed container hoardings, providing shelter and seating for waiting passengers.

Container bus stops keep commuters covered

  • Container hoardings transformed into temporary bus shelters.
  • Keeping commuters safe, dry, and undercover.

Keeping the capital’s commuters moving.

Lambton Quay in Wellington is a hive of commuter activity with Wellington Train Station and parliament nearby, as well as being an access point to the central city and waterfront.

Metlink, which operates a public transport network across the Wellington region, required a temporary solution for covered bus stops while redevelopment of the main bus and railway station is done as part of four major infrastructure projects.

The three Lambton Quay bus stops are a version of Royal Wolf’s 20-foot hoarding product with additional modifications, including seating and the removal of rails to allow pedestrians access through the front of the containers to the roadside.

The bus stops are also skinned with Metlink branding and bus and timetable information.

A wide range of uses

Hoardings are used extensively on construction sites to allow pedestrians and workers a safe passageway around busy and often restrictive workspaces.

Specially designed to be strong and robust while only having one complete steel wall, hoardings are ideal for bus stops as they provide shelter while also visibility for both commuters and bus drivers.

Hoardings have been used for bus stops in a number of locations in the past, including outside the TVNZ building on Auckland’s Victoria Street and during the redevelopment of Quay St on the Auckland waterfront.
